Ledger line notes: read beyond the five staff lines
Ledger lines extend the staff when a note is too high or low for its five lines. A short line through a note works just like a full staff line. The spaces between ledger lines count too.
Find middle C below the treble staff
The bottom line of the treble staff is E4. Move down one position to D4 in the space below, then one more to C4 on the first ledger line. This C4 is middle C. A note below the staff does not automatically sit on a ledger line: D4 is in a space.
Read above the staff
The top line of the treble staff is F5. Above it come G5 in the space, A5 on the first ledger line, and B5 in the next space. Count every line and every space, not only the short lines you can see.
Use a nearby reference
Choose the nearest familiar note, such as E4 below or F5 above, and count a few steps. Check the octave as well as the letter name: C4 and C5 share a name but belong to different keys. Practice a small group before expanding the range.
Check with three notes
Try middle C and two notes above the staff. After a mistake, use the reference note in the explanation and count again.
